I visited your crypt the other day after dropping Nanay off at work. We’ve been thinking a lot about youlately. I mean, we’ve never stoppedthinking of you but the last couple of days were especially difficult. It’s probably because we marked the 3rdmonth of your passing last week and probably because it’s Christmas.

But don’t worry about us, alright? We’ll be fine. You are probablyhaving a blast in heaven preparing for the big birthday bash tomorrow. I wonder what it’s like to celebrateChristmas with Jesus Himself?

We’ve been doing our preps here as well. We had our Christmas tree up as early as November14. I remember the exact date becauseAhiya was so persistent that day to put up the tree and buy a parol for thehouse that I had to list it down on my to-do list. He had his day planned out: “After I comehome from school, I’ll eat lunch, then I’ll go to sleep. When I wake up, we’ll bring out the Christmastree.” Although I had a lot to do thatday, the tree was top priority. Afterpicking up Nanay from the office, we went on to buy the parol (we already did alot of canvassing that’s why Ahiya couldn’t wait to get one already.) We were so excited to show it to him when wegot home. And I knew he liked it becausebefore going to bed he told me, “Tatay, I’m happy because you bought the parol.” Oh I’m sure you would’ve been excited withthe lights too if you were here with us now. I can just imagine your face lighting up the way it does when you seemotorcycles on the road. I miss that.

Nanay also made some DIY projects to teach Ahiya about the meaning ofChristmas. She searched for some AdventWreath projects on the internet that we made together. Ahiya enjoyed cutting and gluing the paper. And we used the rechargeable tea-lights ascandles. During the second Sunday ofAdvent, our family was asked to light the Advent candle and do the offertory duringthe 9AM Mass in Holy Family. This madeAhiya really get into the Advent mood. We remembered the last time we offered in Holy Family with you. That was only last June. But I’m sure you were there with us since itwas the Mass, so we kinda still did that as a whole family, this time with yournew brother Andres (in Nanay’s tummy).

Of course, we didn’t want you to be left out with the decorations so wealso got you a parol and made a wreath for you. Ahiya was the one who colored your wreath and he’d always want to be theone to "put the lights on" every Sunday when we visit you. He also picked the colors for yourparol. You got a really jazzed up cryptthere Lukie! I hope you like it. :)

We had Noche Buena this evening too. Just a simple feast but I think this was the first time we reallyprepared something for Noche Buena. Wehad your picture on the table which was kinda funny and spooky at the sametime. Haha! Ahiya was funny too becausehe enumerated your favorite food: “apple na matigas” (frozen apple shake),pansit and One-One Rice crackers. Heeven got the One-Ones from the cupboard and placed them beside your photo. I really think God gifted Ahiya with amazingmemory and eye for detail so that he’ll make sure we won’t forget you. He really misses you a lot too! He’s got so much extra love that he can’t waitfor Andres to go out of Nanay’s tummy. I’msure he’s gonna be a great Ahiya to Andres too. You would have been a great Diko yourself. :)

Oh, it’s 12 already! The partythere must be starting already! Don’twant you to miss it so I won’t keep you any longer. Have fun and please greet Jesus a happybirthday from all of us. I love you,Lucas! Miss you so much! Merry Christmas!

This was the AVP that I prepared for the launch of “TheHealer is Born”, 29AD Musicionaries’ Christmas album. The CD is dedicated for Lucas and so I wasasked to prepare the video and a short sharing during the launch to rememberour little angel. The song to which theimages were blended was “Oyayi ni Jose at Maria” (Joseph and Mary’s Lullabye) -aptly described in the album to “capture a parent’s love for their child.”

I prayed for the Lord’s guidance as I started (cramming) thevideo. In the middle of it, I was takenback to the last night of Lucas’ wake. After everyone has left, I stayed onbeside his casket to spend the last hours with my son’s earthly body. I held his tiny hands; knelt down so I canstare at his face closely. And as Ilooked up, my attention was drawn to something that was there the whole time butwouldn’t have noticed at a different angle:

Jesus hanging on the cross, His face painted in grief, Hisbody wounded. At this moment, I felt theFather’s embrace and consolation, His message loud and clear. “My dear son, I understand your pain. I have been in your place because I havegiven up my only Son to suffer and die too. Because my love for you is stronger than the pain that I willingly wentthrough. This is how much I love you. I only have good things planned for you.”

The Scripture verse John 3:16 comes to mind. God’s only Son born to die for the salvationof the world. Such is the extent of God’slove. Such is the true meaning of Christmas.

The video is a collection of memories of the times spentwith Lucas and some of his best smiles – something he is most remembered for. They are interlaced with images of the firstChristmas morn when the newborn King rests quietly in His parents’ caress asthe world waits for its Savior. May itremind us of God’s unfathomable love and encourage us to live out our calling tobe a light to the world.

It's 11.11.11!

While several people took advantage of the special date to organize events, promotions and a lot of marketing, we spent it on 29ADs Album Launch for "The Healer is Born", a very unique Christmas Worship album.

I was tasked to prepare an AVP for one of the songs, Oyayi ni Jose at Maria, which would feature Lucas (plus a surprise sharing!). The song was so beautiful! It has a very Christmas-y tune (you can almost feel the cool wind blowing) and carefully crafted words that vividly describes what it would have been like when Christ was born. Listening to the song while scanning through the photos of Lucas made me cry the whole time I was doing the video. Not only because I missed Lucas so much (truth be told, I've never really stopped crying for Luc), but also I felt God's immense love for me and imagined how He might have felt in giving His only Son for us.

The night was awesome! The sharings, the music and the food made you feel that a whole lot of love and sacrifice were given to bring this CD into reality. After all, it was God, through Tito Bob, who "ordered" that this be done and I am sure He was quite happy with how it turned out.

On our way home, traffic was (extra) terrible! Most probably because of all the hoopla this 11.11.11 thing brought about. But I didn't really mind. We finished our Rosary before we even crossed EDSA then I played the new CD on the car stereo.

I would have to say this is the BEST CD 29AD has done by far!
You could feel the Spirit at work because the music and the words just move you. It really blesses -maybe even heals- the listener. The music touches my heart and floods me with the Love of the Father. Technically, the musicality and sound quality is superb - spanning a wide range of genres (and generations!) so there's something for everyone. And it is timeless -which is the whole objective of the CD: to make Christmas songs and worship sing-able all year round!

It's a must have. And a must give.

We had our congenital anomaly scan with Dr. Pilar Lagman-Dy last October 29, 2011.

We're having our THIRD BABY BOY!

Most importantly, there were no obvious anomalies found in the scan. We continue to pray that our baby boy will be perfectly healthy, normal, beautiful, kind and smart!

Here’s one of Lucas’ more recent videos. He just loves music and would usually keephis attention to the choir during Mass and would dance along the fast hymns. This was taken last August in an anticipatedMass at the St. Joseph the Worker Chapel in Meralco:

One of the magical, mystical miracles of the Holy Mass happensduring the Preface and the Sanctum (Holy, Holy). During this part, heaven opens up a“time-space warp” and the congregation joins the non-stop praisefest happeningin heaven. The King of kings isrevealed and all creation magnifies His greatness! This should be an awesome experience though (admittedly)often overlooked or taken for granted by Mass-goers. To be swept up into heaven and be one withthe saints and angels in glorifying God is one of the great, grandiose gifts ofthe Catholic faith! (I don’t want to getall preachy about this but if you want to get a deeper understanding of theMass, this is a good site)

Whenever I go to Mass, I try (sometimes reeeeaal hard) tovisualize this miracle unfolding. BoSanchez’ description usually helps: theceilings of the church being blown away…the clouds breaking open like curtainsopening up to a grand stage…an explosion of brilliant light…God the Father is shownseated on His throne surrounded by Mother Mary and the saints…hundreds ofthousands of angels in joyful song and praise to God!

In one of the Sunday Masses we attended after Lucas’ passing,I once again imagined this magnificent scene as the Sanctum was beingsung. As the ceiling vanished and thecloud curtains rolled away, in my mind I saw Lucas in heaven with a guitar singingalong with the angels. I realized thatthe Holy Mass was a space portal where we can still spend time with Lucas (andall our departed loved ones in heaven) aswe bask in the holy and loving presence of God.

This is a letter from Teacher Kathy Eguia, Lucas' physical therapist. She played a very big role in helping Luc achieve his major developmental milestones. They were very close.

Teacher Kathy left for Belgium to pursue further studies on September 14, 2011. The following day, Lucas left for heaven.

Today is the 40th Day since Lucas' death.
We are bringing him to his final resting place this afternoon.

I'll be posting some nice letters and reflections to remember Lucas by starting with this one by Tita Eden Fernandez:

“Wala na si Lucas…” I found myself crying in the shower as I prayed. The brave little heart has stopped. In the days that followed, this question was always in my mind – why, after all the more difficult things he had to overcome, did this happen now?

Then, the Lord gave me His answer in this Sunday’s reading from Philippians 1:20-24, 27. “Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain… I long to depart from this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

Then the reflection: Either way, Paul wanted his life to be an offering to the Lord and to bear fruit for God’s Kingdom. The value of a life is not in its length but in the love of God that it reveals.

Barely three years, and yet this little angel has given us a lot of lessons in perseverance, bravery, valiant struggles and glorious victories, unconditional love and expectant hope. He is a constant reminder of the blessings of a new day… of little things never taken for granted…

I remember vividly the last time May brought him to a gathering. He was kissing everybody so loudly and bestowing his hugs. He was taking hands to his forehead for a blessing. He was smiling so sweetly he could light up a dark room. I had to resist the urge to take him in my arms and hug him so tightly that his serenity may permeate into my own troubled self, lest I communicate the intensity of what I was feeling and alarm him.

As I gaze at him in the chapel, I didn’t cry. Instead, I smiled because he looked like a young man in his polo and long pants and hair. And that oh so serene countenance! He reminded me of the picture of a saint Mama G gave me as pasalubong from Europe.

“Wala na si Lucas…” No, he will never be gone. He will be in the heart of each and every one of us whose lives he has touched. He is in mine.

Everyday in school, Rafa's teacher draws apicture of an object that starts with the "letter of the week".

Since it's almost sem-break, the kids can choosewhatever letter and object they want drawn on their hands.

Today, Rafa came home with the letters"Ll" on his right hand and a happy face and the word"Lucas" on his left.

He really misses his brother so much.

“Sobrang bitin.”

This thought ran through my mind as it wasstarting to sink in that Lucas has gone home to heaven. God knows how much I was willing to pay forone more day and be able to hug him, kiss him, play with him and put him tosleep one last time. (We should havetaken that trip to Baguio last August!) Before his vital signs went critical, I was whispering “I love you”repeatedly in his ears trying in vain to tell him a lifetime’s worth of “I loveyou’s”.

Ever since Luc’s first surgery (he was only6 days old then), our prayers have been like this: “Lord, we fully entrustLucas to you because You can take care of him far better than we evercould. Mama Mary, take him in your armsand ask the Lord to spare him of any pain.” Justrecently, we were surprised to learn from Ate Ollie (May’s sister) that her closefriend and Luc’s first attending pedia said that given his condition afterbirth (Down syndrome, Hirschprung’s disease, congenital heart defects, Sepsis),he only had 30% chance of survival. Thiswas confirmed by his neonatologist when he visited Luc’s wake. He recalled his conversation with the surgeon(the best in the country) that they didn’t think Luc would make it through thatsurgery. But with legions of peoplepraying for Lucas, he defied bleak medical prognosis and lived on to surpassthree more major operations, including his open-heart.

Father Joey Faller, in his homilies duringthe wake, oddly took time to compute the exact length of Luc’s life in days. He died 2 days before his birthday spendingexactly 1,093 days in the world. Whilethis seems very short by earthly standards, Fr. Joey emphasized that this wasmore than enough time to enjoy Lucas’ presence.

It dawned on us: Maybe Lucas was nevermeant to stay in this world. Maybe itwas God’s original plan to take him to heaven at Day 6. But the Almighty succumbed to His onlyweakness: His people praying and pleading that Luc be brought to good health. We are still amazed at the number of peoplewho interceded for him – some we don’t even know personally.

With mercy and compassion, God added agenerous number to our little boy’s life - and Lucas didn’t waste a singleday. He used every one of them to bringsunshine to everyone around him. Hissmile, worthy of heaven, gave people inspiration and meaning. At such an innocent age, he has touched a lotwith his courage, friendliness and positivity. He showed us how we ought to live the life God has given us.

As I reflected further, I remembered one ofthe songs which were sang during the last night of the wake –originallyfast-paced but rendered in a mellow tune to “fit the mood”. The words of the song go:

More than Icould hope or dream of
You have poured Your favor on me
One day in the house of God is
Better than a thousand days inthe world

This became one of our sources ofconsolation. God’s promise of “His greatplans for Lucas” may have been different from what we had expected. But He has truly blessed us with a generousamount of time (by heaven’s standards, making God wait for a day is heaps!) andour lives have been richly blessed far more than what we could have imagined bythe thousand (plus) earth days we shared with Lucas.

Subject: VUR Gone!

This was the last Lucas update I emailed to our prayer warriors before Lucas' death.

It was sent last July 8, 2011 and contained mostly good news!

Praise God for resolving most of his medical issues before calling him back. He went Home perfect.

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

We would like to thank everyone for all the prayers during Lucas’ kidney X-ray last Wednesday.

With so much joy, we’d like to share to you that the results showed that the vesicoureteral reflux has already resolved! This is major since if there was no improvement in the condition (or if it worsened), we would have to discuss the possibility of another surgery. He had bilateral Grade III-IV VUR.

Our urologist, Dr. Michael Gaston, even did 2 cycles of the VCUG and said he wanted to make sure he got the right results. Seeing that the reflux resolved by itself, he told us that this was unusual for someone who already had pull-through surgery! I guess Lucas was again granted a miracle! Praise our awesome God!

I also want to take this opportunity to share the other breakthroughs that Lucas had during the past months. My last update was more than a year ago and there are some friends who are asking how he’s been doing. So here are a few milestones:

· Sept 2010 – he celebrated his 2^nd birthday. During this time, his physical therapist, Teacher Kathy, set a goal that he should start to walk in 6 months.

· He started walking a few days before Christmas!

· His December 2010 kidney ultrasound showed that the kidney stones found last April 2009 were already gone!

· He was given the go-signal to start speech therapy last April 2011 by Tita Doc Jackie Navarro and his OT, Teacher Erika.

Once again, thanks for all the prayers! Your intercession has indeed made all these miracles possible.

Today, The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we first heard the heartbeat and confirmed the coming of the newest member of the family! Praise God!

Celebrated May's birthday weekend with a lunch at Heat in Shang c/o Ate Ollie (the best things in life are free!). We started the day with the whole family going with Lucas to therapy. It was Rafa's first time to go to the center and he kept himself busy playing with some of the toys. Lucas had a very good mood in therapy that day. After lunch, we all went to the American War Memorial and Bonifacio High Street for some pasyal and merienda.

heaven welcomes an angel of love

It broke our hearts when we learned yesterday that Eros, the little angel whom we have been praying for during the past month, passed away.

Eros Soichi, son of Eric and Maricris and brother to Daryl, is a baby with Down Syndrome. He was also diagnosed to have T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He had been in and out of the hospital for blood platelet transfusion for the past weeks until he finally breathed his last last Sunday.

He is only a month older than our Lucas.

His father Eric opened his letter announcing Eros' passing this way:

"GOD is so Good that He save(d) Eros from more pains to come.
Past 10 pm, yesterday, Eros took a deep breath & he then close(d) his eyes. And it was the last breath we witnessed."

Amazing how the first words that came out from him were praises to our God. There are only a few things I can imagine that is worse than losing a son. If he was angry, it would have been totally okay. But no; he saw the bigger and better plans that God has for Eros.

Let there be no doubt that these children are indeed great blessings from God. No matter how short the time they may have spent with us, we are left as better people more sensitive to the blessings that God continuously gives us.

Today, I will offer my Mass service for the eternal repose of Baby Eros and for the comfort and consolation of his loving family.

After 22 days and 2 surgeries, we welcomed Lucas back at home yesterday!

We thank you for all the prayers and support you have offered for Luc and our family.
We've once again proven the immense power of prayer.

All praise and glory to the Great Healer and Provider, the Faithful One, our Almighty God. :D

lucas update: after the re-OR

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

We’d like to thank you for your intercession and support during our most recent call for prayers during Lucas’ emergency OR last Thursday. Sorry for not being able to update most of you on the outcome last week but please know that your prayers are doing wonders for Lucas.

The surgery last week was necessary to “fix” the previous surgery wounds that were damaged by bacterial infection. He was able to recover from the second operation but we are still treating the infection. However, the reinforced stitches are a lot nastier this time– definitely not for the faint of heart.

Looking at the bright side, we are at least attacking the bacteria with antibiotics that are effective against it, thanks to the results of the blood culture. Lucas has also been allowed to resume feeding with no restrictions and is in fact encouraged to eat more. He’s also been moving his bowel quite regularly which is a good sign that his intestinal tract is already working.

Nevertheless, none of his doctors has given us any assurance that he’s already out of danger. Besides, we have yet to confirm through (blood) tests if the treatment has been indeed effective. He also has a femoral catheter inserted directly through his vein where IV meds can be injected or blood drawn for tests. This saves him a lot of discomfort from frequent needle punctures but also exposes him to possible infections (which come when a foreign object is inserted). We’re doing our best to prevent any possible contamination.

Our prayer goals now are: 1) for effective treatment of his infection; that the blood culture results turn up clear. 2) protection against any new infection 3) that his femoral catheter hold for the entire duration of his treatment 4) that all his wounds would heal completely and quickly and that he be spared from pain 5) that his appetite improves and his gastro-intestinal system to work flawlessly (no more throw-ups and regular bowel movement).

We continue to ask for your prayers. We know that Lucas is on his way to complete healing because God is faithful to His promises and He cannot refuse his people’s collective prayers. We thank you for being with us in this journey; you will also be in our family’s prayers.

urgent prayer requests for lucas

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

We need your prayers again for Lucas.

Luc will be going back to the OR tonight at 6PM for closure of wound dehiscence. His surgical wound re-opened and the doctors would need to stitch them back.

During the past days, Lucas has also been battling bacterial infection. The blood culture came out today and we learned that the bacteria that infected him are not sensitive to the antibiotics we have been given him thus far. We have just started to adjust his antibiotics to better treat the infection. It will take another 10-14 days for treatment. To make it a little more complicated, the antibiotic that is effective against the bacteria can only be administered intravenously. However, the doctors have had a difficult time to look for an IV line, much more one that would hold for the long haul treatment.

During the OR tonight, an additional surgical procedure (called a cutdown) may be done on Lucas to directly access a vein via a cannula/ tube where the meds can be given. This involves another surgery but this may be more beneficial for him so he won’t undergo the stress of multiple needle insertions. (He’s already a bit traumatized every time the nurses/doctors do their rounds.)

Please help us in praying for a safe and complication-free operation, quick recovery and complete healing from the infection. We pray that his already tired body be able to withstand another procedure.

We believe that God is still in control and we trust that He will take care of Lucas.

lucas' post-operation update

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

We thank you again for all the prayers yesterday for Lucas' operation. The surgery went well; it started at exactly 7AM and was finished by around 10AM. Lucas stayed in the recovery room after the operation and was back in the regular room by 4PM.

Lucas needs to move his bowels post-op to determine that his colon and rectum are functioning well. But this can take up to 2-3 days according to the doctors so we shouldn't worry about this yet. The cause for concern right now is Lucas' persistent fever since last night. They will have to do some tests and start other types of antibiotics to address this. We're praying that the fever isn't caused by any serious infection.

Lucas has been a little cranky especially now that his anesthesia has worn off. Plus he's already very hungry as he's not allowed any food intake until he moves his bowels. We haven't seen his usual smile since after the operation.

Please please continue praying for Lucas. We trust that God is taking good care of him.

pull through

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Today, after getting good results in his urinalysis this morning, Lucas got his attending pedia's and nephrologist's clearance. We are good to go for the pull-through tomorrow. The OR is scheduled at 7:00 AM. Praise God!

We now put everything in God's hands. Once again, we surrender Lucas to Him completely knowing (by experience) that He can best perform His miracles when He is in full control. We ask our dear Mother Mary to intercede for us and to ask Jesus for another miracle.

Thank you everyone for the prayers and words of encouragement. Please keep them coming and know that we also draw strength from all of you.

Some random thoughts :

* We are really thankful for our set of doctors/ consultants not only because they are the best in what they do (Go PGH!) but also because they are praying doctors. As in some have their regular daily prayer time and they include Lucas in their intentions. We do not think twice every time we recommend these doctors to our friends.

* If you were to ask me a week ago if I'm ready for this surgery, I would say that it hasn't sunk in yet. But when May reminds me of the time when I have to bring Lucas myself to the operating table, I would dread the very thought of it. I guess I will never be ready for this event. Now, I'm a few hours away from the operating table. I still dread it but surprisingly I am also looking forward to it. Maybe it's because we're excited to finally see the bag go, or maybe I only want to send positive vibes to Lucas when we wheel him in. Or maybe it's the other way around: it's Lucas who's sending me positive vibes. His smile is as contagious as ever. I think if there's anyone who wants to get rid of the bad most, it's him!

* Most people don't like being in hospitals. For some reason, I enjoy being here. It's almost like a field trip for me. Haha. I only have fond memories of PGH, TMC and PHC. For us, these are the places where we experience God's miracles first hand.

Got clearance from endocrinologist; surgeon is ready. Nephrologist is an angel but the urinalysis is a party pooper. Checking-in at PGH today despite the culture and X-ray have yet to clear. (prayers pleeeease!) Looks like it's going to be another suspense thriller by the Great Author. We can't wait to see the end of this chapter though.

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Our family wishes to thank everyone for all your support and prayers during the past year. Thank you for journeying with us through the struggles and the milestones that Lucas had to face and overcome. We couldn’t have done it without your prayers and God’s amazing grace. We look forward to a lot more miracles and overwhelming blessings for 2010 not only for our family but for each one of you as well.

Lucas has been doing very well after the heart operation last June. He started gaining some weight and is very active. He has also done a good job in his physical therapy sessions and was able to sit down by himself (from lying down) around the first week of December.

We start the year with another challenge as Lucas is scheduled for the pull-through operation next week (January 15). Despite the risks involved in another surgery, we face it with expectant hearts eager to undergo another Divine experience. We are excited too that a few days from now, Lucas can do away with “the bag:” Praise God!

We continue to ask for your intercession for Lucas and his successful operation. Please also pray that he may be free from any infection that may delay the surgery. We also continue to lift up his other health concerns (hypothyroidism, asthma, renal concerns, etc.) that the Lord will grant him complete healing soon.

Thank you for your valuable gift of prayer and concern. May the God of infinite providence bless us all immensely this year!

Two weeks ago, I attended a Disaster Risk Reduction Forum organized by the Lopez Group Foundation. The speakers were scientists from The Manila Observatory and UP NIGS.

At one point, they showed us a google-based Interactive Flood Map where anyone can input the maximum flood height experienced in their area. This is basically an effort to record (and immortalize) the profile of the floods caused by Ondoy. Community contributions are greatly encouraged to get the public involved and to spread disaster awareness. The profile may be used for various purposes like determining flood-prone areas, urban development planning, disaster recovery planning, etc.

lucas' first birthday

We celebrated Lucas' birthday last Sunday (Sep 20, 2009) with a thanksgiving and victory lunch held at the SM Grass Residences Clubhouse. May and I planned it to be a simple celebration to express our gratitude to family and friends who prayed for and supported Lucas. It was also a victory celebration for a year full of miracles and blessings!

We got more than we expected because it turned out to be a very special day for us highlighted by a powerful healing session by Fr. Joey Faller. We were surrounded by very special and loving people. We just couldn't ask for anything more!

Below is the video presentation shown during the gathering. There were so many things we wanted to say in this 4 minute video. We wanted to show the miracles that Lucas experienced and the things we are grateful for for the past year. We wanted to show that people with Down Syndrome can live a full life and this is our hope and prayer for our son. We wanted that God be glorified because of the great things he has done and has planned for our family.

celebrating life's simple joys

We celebrated three occassions this month: our linen wedding anniversary, grandparent's day, and Lucas' first birthday.

We just had simple date on the day of our anniversary. Dinner consisted of sloppy hotdog sandwiches, nachos and chicken nuggets. We then saw a movie afterwards. (Watching movies have been a luxury for us-- reserved only for super special days like our anniversary! haha!) We watched the new Disney Pixar movie Up, which interestingly turned out to be a fitting movie for an anniversary. We had no idea what the plot was all about prior to seeing the movie. Thank God for this pleasant surprise.

The Sunday after that was grandparent's day and so we decided to bring our Moms and the boys to Tagaytay for a day trip. So this would be the family's joint celebration for all 3 occasions.

We had brunch at Bag of Beans, dropped by the Pink Sisters to write a thank you note then made some quick stops for some pasalubong (Loumar's, Good Shepherd, pineapples, kesong puti).

Yun lang.

Things need not be extravagant to be special. Oftentimes, the simple events bring the happiest moments.

lucas update: 365 days

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Today is Lucas' first birthday!

Taking it one day at a time, it's quite amazing and surprising that 365 have already passed! We praise God for each and every one of those days - all filled with His grace and miracles without which we wouldn't have lasted. And we thank you for the constant prayers since Day 1. :)

Since his heart surgery last June, Lucas has been doing very well. Last August, the doctor already discontinued his heart medication after having good clinical observations. We just need to do another 2D echo to be sure.

Upon his cardiologist's clearance, we have also started his physical therapy about 4 weeks ago and he has responded remarkably well! Lucas has already improved his use of his arms and elbows and developed quite strong head control. Our short-term goal is for him to be able to sit on his own. (We're so excited about this!)

We are really just starting to enjoy our time with Lucas sans the urgent concerns on his health. Rafa has been a very sweet ahiya/ kuya, always ready to play with him or offer a kiss and a hug! This is great because the stimuli help in Lucas' development. Also, we are able to gradually bring him to public places and had his first out-of-town trip last Sunday! :D

Of course, some of the medical concerns are still there (vesicoureteral reflux, hyperthyroidism, hypotonia, etc.) and we're still preparing for his pull-through operation. We're also scheduled for a visit to the eye and the ear doctors very soon. So we hope that you would continue praying for Lucas' specific health concerns. Hopefully, there will be only one more surgery that he has to go through.

Once again, we thank you for all the encouragement and prayers you have given our family for the past year. The gift of life and miracles are indeed worth celebrating and we share these victorious moments with you. All glory to God who makes all things possible and whose plans are indeed the best!

photo essay: lucas' heart surgery

The days spent during Lucas' open heart surgery brought us such rich experiences that we do not want to forget. It was difficult to write down the emotions and events that transpired since you can't seem to put in words the profundity of God's hand and wisdom at work during this episode of our family's life. So I thought a photo essay would somehow be more effective in triggering the thoughts and feelings we felt that time and to help us relive these moments.

At The Medical City. Lucas first operation schedule was supposed to be on May 11, 2009. However, we got delayed because he contracted 2 infections in a row: pneumonia and UTI. So we got admitted at the Medical City until we got clearance from the other consultants (pulmonologist, nephrologist, infectious disease). Despite being sick, Lucas always had a ready smile which made him the nurses' favorite "guest".

When we finally got cleared from infection, we headed straight to The Philippine Heart Center because our cardiologist didn't want him to contract another infection which might delay the procedure again plus if we're already confined, we might get an earlier operation schedule. We stayed at Petal C Room 340 Bed D.

What it looks like: Tatay fooling around with Lucas.
What it really is: Tatay trying to spend as much time with Luc and taking as much pictures as he can because he really didn't know (during this time) how long God will lend Lucas to them.

Yes, we were so scared for Lucas but here's a secret: When I prayed for Lucas, I visualized I was in a room with Jesus and Mother Mary; and I was handing over Lucas to Jesus. He was now carrying Luc in His very arms. I told Jesus that Luc would be entirely in His and His mother's care starting that day. The sooner we entrust our concerns to Him, the sooner He can act on them and solve our problems.

The last shot of Lucas' scarless chest. I was planning before to take him to a studio for a bare-chested shot but we never got the chance since he had to be confined weeks before the procedure. This was taken hours before the open heart surgery (which was scheduled on June 10, 2009, 7AM). Buti pa si Luc ang sarap ng tulog before the surgery. May and I hardly got any sleep!

Nanay May preparing Lucas for the surgery. We were already packing stuff as early as 4AM since we weren't able to sleep anyway. Before 6AM, we woke up Lucas, cleaned him up and dressed him up for the surgery. He was to be wheeled in at 6:30AM because the surgeon wanted to "cut at exactly 7AM." The bubbly anesthesiologist was the one who met us in the OR and her happy disposition kinda appeased us that our son is in good hands. All that was left to do at this point was pray and wait. And pray and wait we did!

By around 10:40AM, the intercom at the waiting area announced that the surgeon was ready to see us. He told us that the surgery went well and how big the holes actually were and that the 2 holes which we thought were gone were still there. Everything was corrected during the operation. Next goal is for Lucas to wake up.

Patients are transferred to the Recovery Room after operation and would stay there for a mandatory 24-hour period. Prior to the operation, we were told to prepare financially because babies with Down Syndrome usually recover longer than "normal" babies. Lucas might stay on the ventilator for an extra day or two.

During the 12nn viewing time, we were totally surprised to see him awake and wagging his arms when the curtains were pulled aside! This was short of 2 hours since the operation. At around 4PM the same day, they were able to take off the ventilator because he was already able to breath well on his own. Truly nothing short of a miracle!

After 24 hours in the Recovery Room, Lucas was transferred to the PICU. This was how he looked the first time I saw him in the ICU. My concern then was he might not smile as much as before because of possible trauma due to the operation. (It sounds so foolish now.)

Wow! The most dramatic change that we noticed after the operation: to finish a bottle of milk without gasping for air! Seeing this made me teary eyed. Imagine all the months that he was probably hungry but just couldn't take in as much milk as he wants to. The things we take for granted. The intensivist told us to expect Lucas to be more demanding in the coming days, he's gonna make up for the eight months that he was under "diet". We'd take the sleepless night anytime if it means a healthier Luc.

After another 24 hours in the ICU and Lucas was ready for transfer to the regular room. Doctors were so happy with his quick recovery. I personally carried him as we were wheeled-in on a wheelchair from the ICU to the room. He was still a little irritable during the first hours in the room, which again made we worry that he might lose his sunny disposition. Here, he was wearing a custom-made tunic-like garment from his Lola Lety. Doesn't he look like a real Jedi padawan like Luke Skywalker?

After a few days we can see him smile more often! Yay! Maybe it was because he was feeling a bit of discomfort when the anesthesia wore out shortly after the surgery. We're sure glad to see him charm those nurses again. Would you ever think this little boy had open heart surgery 3 days ago?

The brave little warrior shows off his battle scars. It was time to take off the bandages and Lola Lety's custom Velcro tunic made it very easy to access the wound. No problem at all for the tiny hero.

Independence day. This was taken on the day we were to leave the hospital. The cardiologist declared Lucas as the "Winner!" because he was the first and the quickest to recover and be sent home among her patients who had surgery. With God's grace and power, Luc defied all the doctors' expectations. Truly, nothing short of a miracle.

Homecoming. After three weeks in the hospital, Lucas comes home and sees Ahiya Rafa. It was also almost Lucas' 9 months so we celebrated with cake and pansit. Rafa seems to be more excited to see the cake here, hahaha.

Again and again, we thank everyone for the prayers and support that you've given our family during this time. We are so glad to share with you these miracles that were brought about by your intercession.

rafa: 25 months sans TV

It's a big blessing to be advised early on about the detrimental effects of TV to the development of babies and toddlers. I think we first read about it on Queena Lee-Chua and Maribel Dionisio's book where they cited an American Association of Pediatrics statement on the negative health effects of TV. (There are lots of other stuff you can read about the bad effects of TV, one of them is this.) This was also confirmed by our good friend Dr. Jackie, who sees Rafa and who specializes in Developmental Pedia. She even recommended zero-TV until age three!

I have to admit that at first, I thought it was going to be really difficult. May and I enjoy watching TV ourselves (our Sunday nights were spent watching three CSI episodes in a row!) But, of course, we had to follow whatever's best for the boys. And we're sure glad that we got the support from the whole household who sacrificed precious TV-viewing time every time Rafa was around. (thanks Lolas and Ates!)

So now, I think we're reaping the benefits of zero-TV. Rafa had advanced language skills during his baseline dev screening. What a chatterbox he's turned out to be! He probably knows over a thousand words and can already construct simple logical sentences ("Rafa, takbo, tumba, gasgas"; "Bata suot purple Crocs, Rafa suot red Crocs.") And even though he doesn't watch TV, he knows Dora, Diego, Barney, BJ, Baby-bop, Mickey Mouse, Sulley, Woody, etc. because he gobbles up his books just like any kid would soak in a TV program on Nickelodeon or the Disney channel.

lucas update: home at last!

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

We like to thank everyone again for all the prayers, blood donations and material support for Lucas!

Luc was discharged Monday morning from the hospital. His cardiologist declared him the “winner” among all her patients who underwent surgery last week because he was the quickest to recover and sent home. (With the number of people praying for Luc, this shouldn’t be a surprise at all!) It was a happy family moment for us to see Ahiya Rafa and Shoti Lucas reunited after three long weeks! Ahiya was so excited to welcome Luc home.

Since the operation, Lucas has been feeding very well. It was such a delight to see him finish a bottle of milk without gasping for air (Oh, the things we take for granted!). One of the consultants told us that we would expect him to be more demanding now for milk because he’s going to make up for the last 8 months that he had difficulty feeding. True enough, he would wake us up in the middle of the night to ask for milk- an inconvenience we welcome gladly.

Although his chest suture is already dry, the heart wounds would fully heal for about 3 to 6 months. We’re giving him all the time he needs to rest and recover and just try our best to keep him away from infections (with the help of your prayers, of course!). Upon clearance from the cardiologist, he can start his physical therapy to improve his muscle tone and motor skills. And when he gets much better and gains enough weight, we can start to prepare for his pull-through surgery to correct his colostomy. (Hopefully, this would be his last and we won’t require another surgery for his vesicoureteral reflux) But since we’re taking this one day at a time, all these are still far into the horizon. (For now, we’d rather think about preparations for his 1st birthday! :)

We just ask for your continued prayers for Lucas’ recovery for the next few months. Without a doubt, all the blessings and favors came from our Mighty God, through the love of our dearest Mother Mary and through the intercession of Heavenly and you earthly saints. May this victory glorify our God and strengthen our belief in the power of prayer.

lucas update: surgery a success!

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Praise, honor and glory to the Great Healer and Awesome God!

Lucas' heart operation yesterday was completed successfully. The surgery took around 3.5 hours and the doctors told us that he is recovering very well.

During the surgery, the doctors still found the 2 holes that we previously thought were closed. The VSD which was measured as 6-7mm was actually 1cm wide! All holes were closed during the operation.

His doctors told us that he is recovering quite remarkably! We were happily surprised to see him already conscious around 12nn yesterday during viewing time at the Recovery Room. By 4pm, he was able to breathe without ventilator support! He will be transferred to the ICU today where he will be monitored as he continues to recover.

We have no doubt that all these favors are being made possible by all the prayers and Masses being said for Lucas' intentions! God's work and mercy is truly amazing - nothing short of a miracle!

Our family is very grateful for all your prayers and support. You have helped us weather the recent challenges through your intercession and encouragement. We hope that you will continue to join us in praying for his full recovery.

lucas update: OR schedule

Lucas’ surgery will be on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 7:00AM at the Philippine Heart Center.

At this point, we now put everything in God’s hands. We praise Him for giving us such a precious gift and we trust in His promise that “all things will work together for good to those who love God.” (Rom 8:28).

May you continue to be with us in praying for Lucas’ successful surgery and full recovery. May his body be ready for the procedure (he still has low hemoglobin count) and be protected from any illness (we’re staying in a shared semi-private room). May God shield him from any pain or discomfort.

A Journey of Faith and Miracles, A Day at A Time

Being in my Catholic renewal community for 14 years, I have probably heard hundreds of testimonies of God's greatness. People sharing their own journeys: struggles and eventual triumph through God's mysterious yet marvelous ways. But each miracle story, although genuinely awesome and undoubtedly inspiring, has struck a lingering question in my mind: "Must every true Christian go through severe troubles to be able to experience God's saving grace?" If I were to follow Jesus, then surely there would be rough times ahead of me. After all, Jesus did say, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me" (Mk 8:34) Oh, I dreaded that and I often wondered if I could ever withstand such a test.

That fateful day finally came for me on the September 17, when our second son, Victor Lucas was born. Shortly after his birth, our doctor told us that Lucas had the characteristics of a baby with Down syndrome (DS). They did a chromosomal test which confirmed it a week later. Since 50% of DS babies have congenital heart disease, we also ran some tests and found- not one- but three holes in his heart. As if this weren't enough, we also learned that he had severe intestinal defects which didn't allow him to excrete waste out of his body. He suffered from life-threatening Sepsis and at 6 days of life, he had to undergo an emergency operation (colostomy) to create an opening in his abdomen where his waste can be expelled. Post-operation was very critical because he had DS and a bad heart.

All these happened within a week after Lucas was born. The pain and the fear that enveloped me and my wife, May, seemed unbearable. During May's pregnancy, our prayers were very specific: a healthy, beautiful, smart, kind and normal baby. Did the Lord turn to us a deaf ear? Amidst the chaos and the doubt, were the Lord's affirming words: "I do not do things by accident…I have given you not a burden but a blessing…I have great plans for Lucas…" I have never heard the Lord speak to me as clearly as during those seven days. When the dreaded day of trial came to our family, we felt strangely blessed. At the end of each day we look at what we have been able to overcome and we are left with new wisdom out of each experience.

For the next couple of months, Lucas battled several infections and had to undergo a battery of tests. We had to see an eye and ear doctors because we first thought he had seeing and hearing disorders. He was later diagnosed with hypothyroidism. We also found out that he had kidney stones and urinary tract disorders that caused him UTI. And he still has to undergo therapy for his Down syndrome. Yes, these were difficult days and we still have a long arduous journey ahead. But we would never have gained the wisdom and strength that God wanted to give us had we not undergone these trials.

We have discovered that the secret in overcoming the tests of faith is by putting your focus on His promises. I realized that my moments of despair were the moments I have burdened myself with the worries of tomorrow - How long will Lucas be sick? How could we ever afford the surgeries and therapies? Where shall we send him to school? But the Lord said, "Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (-Mt 6:34)" God had already promised great things through Lucas, and it is not for us to ask "How?" We must put our trust on the one thing that is sure - that God fulfills His promises. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways; And My thoughts than your thoughts. (-Is 55:9)", says the Lord. We are given only enough grace to last the day's challenges and we should eagerly anticipate how Jesus would take us out of our burdens. This is not always easy as we still find ourselves struggling with faith. But the Lord wants us to live each day trusting in His miracles.

Looking back, I think that these difficult experiences are indeed required of us who seek to journey with Jesus. After going through these experiences, we will realize that they are neither burdens nor punishments. These difficulties allow us to fully understand and experience God's amazing power. These hardships are the only way to open for us a life of abounding miracles and blessings as we recognize God's hand and glory in all our experiences.

lucas update: from TMC to PHC

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

First of all, we apologize for not being able to update sooner with regard to the schedule of Lucas’ heart surgery. Quite a number of people have texted and emailed us last Tuesday to ask if the operation pushed through since we mentioned last time that the earliest schedule for the operation was June 2.

We praise God for again delivering us out of another ordeal! Today, Lucas will receive his final dose of his IV meds to treat the suspected infection that was detected in his urine tests. During his stay, our nephrologists referred us to an infectious disease expert since the infection still appeared after having getting renal clearance (kidneys). After a couple more tests, the ID doctor cleared him also for surgery. There were no major infections causing inflammation to any part of the body but he has to finish his antibiotic treatment to ensure that he’s totally “clean” going into surgery. The stay at the hospital, aside from the routine injections and pricks for the tests (our running count: 17 tusoks and 2 catheterizations! Some of them unnecessary), was quite uneventful.

Thank you so much po for praying for his recovery from this recent infection. Lucas has kept his positive disposition and the residents and nurses just think he’s a darling because he still manages to smile even after getting pricked.

Tomorrow, we will be discharging him from The Medical City then, if there is an available room, proceed straight to The Philippine Heart Center for preparation for the heart surgery. Although the next free schedule for surgery is June 13, we might be able to get an earlier schedule if he’s already admitted in the PHC. Our cardiologist also wants him to get confined to avoid contracting any more infection which might again delay the surgery. (And we can’t bring Luc home because Rafa’s having asthma attacks with the sudden change in weather. Please pray for him too.)

So we’re approaching the biggest battle yet. We are getting ready for the worst (though honestly, we’re still very far from being ready for that) but we’re hoping for the best! Still holding on to God’s promise and banging Heaven’s gate for our miracle. =) We hope that you will continue to pray for Lucas. We really need them now more than ever.

Please continue praying for miraculous healing. If the Lord has “better” plans, please help us pray that we get an available room tomorrow and an earlier schedule for the operation. Please pray for a successful, complication-free surgery. Please pray for quick and painless recovery for Lucas.

lucas update: pre-surgery infection

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Here we are again asking for prayers for our baby Lucas.

He has been confined in the hospital since Sunday to again treat an
infection in his urinary tract. Although the infection is not very serious
under normal circumstances, the fact that he is being prepared for surgery
makes it necessary to treat him first.

The results of urine culture taken last Sunday came in today and it showed
another growth of bacteria. The bacteria found was precisely the type that
will grow in the patch that will be used to close the hole in his heart.
Definitely, he has to be “clean” first before proceeding with the surgery.

The doctors will do another culture today to determine if the antibiotics
we started last Sunday has been effective in treating the infection.
However, the nephrologist wants to make sure that we get a sure “clean
catch” of the urine so she ordered collection through a catheter inserted
through his urinary tract.

Our prayer request is that the Lord would not let him feel any pain nor
discomfort during this collection procedure. He has already gone through a
lot of injections and pricks for IV meds and blood tests.

Of course, we also pray that all infections would be resolved soon and that
he doesn’t contract any new ones. We pray that he’ll be ready for surgery
soon. (Or maybe, we can still pray that he won’t need one at all!)

Once he gets cleared, we’ll immediately proceed with the heart surgery.
The earliest free schedule at the Heart Center is on June 2.

rafa's big debut

May twenty-third, a day after his 2nd birthday, was Rafa's big day! For the first time, he was to march as part of the wedding entourage, particularly as a coin/arrhae bearer.

When we got news of the invitation, we were naturally all excited about it. Every Sunday, we would stay at the Chapel after the Mass to practice his walk. This earned the ire of a lady Church-goer who would also stay to pray because she thought that we were just playing. She politely told us to "respect the house of God" but when we explained what we were doing, she smiled and told us that she will pray that Rafa will march come wedding day.

Anyway, after weeks of practice and prepping, when the time for him to march came...well, he didn't. Hahaha! We were hoping that since Kuya Joaquin was part of the entourage, he would simply follow him as he usually does when they are playing. However, he seemed uncomfortable with the new environment (his first time to see the big Church) and all the attention given him. We didn't budge at all! (So sorry Tito Bill and Tita Che!)

Next time, which is this Thursday for Tito Meng and Tita Grace's wedding, we'll be at the Church earlier so Rafa would have time to warm up. It's gonna be a looooong walk at the Mt. Carmel Church so we're keeping our fingers crossed!

PS: But doesn't he look dashing in barong? ;)

rafa turns 2

Rafa turned 2 last Friday! Yipeee!

May and I already agreed that we will not have parties until the 7th birthday. It was going to be simple celebrations with the immediate family.

However, (Lola) Darling- our resident Martha Stewart/ Barefoot Contessa- could not have allowed that to happen. So she brought in her Party Crew who have been doing our birthdays since I was Rafa's age and - Viola!- an instant garage party! Just like the ones we used to have in Odelco!

To top it all off, Lola Linda had a BIG surprise of her own: A Cars-themed trike! It was the happiest day of Rafa's life!

And it was one of our happiest too!

update on lucas' operation

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Once again, Lucas' operation will have to be postponed.

This time, his urinalysis (which we did twice!) indicate an infection but we can't tell right now what's causing it because the culture didn't show any bacterial growth. We will see a nephrologist again tomorrow to find out the possible cause of the infection and how to treat it.

Please continue to pray for his healing. We really don't know what God's plans are but we just trust that He has reasons for these delays.

Yesterday, May 12 and the Feast of St. Pancratius - The patron saint of children, we discharged Lucas from the hospital. The doctors wanted him to avoid getting more infections in the hospital so he would just finish his medication at home. We'll have the X-ray and some tests to check if he's already cleared from the pneumonia and if he's ready for the heart surgery. If all goes well, we'll have the surgery on May 19.

Thank you po for praying for his healing. We continue to rely on your intercession especially next week when we proceed with the operation.

lucas' new hurdle and an answered prayer

Dear family, friend and prayer warriors,

Lucas’ operation will not push through as we recently planned.

Yesterday, his blood and urine test as well as his chest X-ray revealed that he contracted a new infection: pneumonia. The cardiologist was not confident to pursue the operation with this infection so we had to postpone the surgery.

Lucas is now confined at The Medical City for treatment against pneumonia. Once resolved and cleared from any other infection, we will proceed with the surgery. The tentative date would be May 19.

On a happier note, during his 2D echo, the doctor didn’t see one of the holes in his heart (PDA – Patent Ductus Arteriosus), which may mean that it already closed! The attending cardiologist would still have to confirm this but we’ll take it as God’s affirmation that He’s still in control however downcast everything seems to be. Indeed, another miracle. Another great thing is that his pneumonia doesn’t seem to have any symptom: no coughs or colds, no heavy breathing. At least he’s not in any pain or discomfort right now.

If you see Lucas, you won’t have any clue how sick he really is. He’s so unaware of his medical condition so he just keeps on smiling and playing with his arms and legs. He is such a source of encouragement for us.

We continue our plea for your prayers for healing and protection. Thank you for helping us go through challenge after challenge with your intercession and encouragement.

lucas' heart surgery

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

We again write to you to ask for your fervent prayers for our dear Lucas.

His kidney and urinary ultrasound revealed that he has stones in both kidneys. After 2 rounds of antibiotic treatment, we were able to resolve his UTI. Because of the kidneys stones, the cardiologist recommended that we do the heart surgery soon since his bad heart would be prone to infection. We also didn't want his pulmonary hypertension to worsen, which may add complications to the operation.

Last Monday, April 27, we also confirmed that he has Grade III to IV vesicoureteral
reflux, which means the urine from his bladder goes back to his ureters up to his kidneys. The reflux may be corrected surgically, but the urologist wanted to wait if he can still outgrow it. In the meantime, he'll take antibiotics to prevent recurrence of the UTI until the reflux is corrected.

During the weekend, we had quite a scare because he had persistent fevers. The doctors requested for urinalysis and CBC tests but they were both clear. Yesterday, we found out that it was Roseola (tigdas hangin) when the rashes started to come out. This was a viral infection common to children but it won't affect his readiness for the heart operation.

We only have a few tests to do (urinalysis, x-rays, blood tests, 2D echo) before the doctors deem him ready for the operation. If all goes well, we will admit him on Saturday at the Philippine Heart Center in preparation for his May 11 open heart surgery.

We continue to pray for a last-minute miracle. If God wills it, his next 2Decho will reveal no holes in the heart. Nothing is impossible with God! If the operation pushes through, let's all pray for its success and that Lucas can quickly recover. Having Down syndrome, he faces increased risks during post-op recovery. His colostomy would also be a possible source of infection during the surgery. We need lots of prayers for protection and quick recovery. We know that through our collective prayers, we can again surpass this challenge.

"The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth." (-Psalm 145:18) May you again be with us in calling upon our Great Healer. And may He be glorified through the challenges we all face.

lucas' UT infection

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

We would like to ask for special prayers for Lucas.

Two weeks ago, we found out that he had UTI (urinary tract infection). We have been managing this with antibiotics and today is the last day of medication. Since this is the first UTI occurrence, his attending doctor recommended a work-up to rule-out the possibilty of vesicoureteral (VU) reflux, a condition where urine from the bladder flows back and causes infection to the kidneys (not related to DS). The doctor said that kidneys are so efficient that symptoms of a damaged kidney would only show when only 10% of the kidneys remain to be functional. That is why we need to do the work-up to make sure we detect it/ rule it out early on.

Today, we will be doing the repeat urinalysis and urine culture/ sensitivity to ensure that the infection has been resolved. We will also do a KUB (kidney, ureters, bladder) ultrasound to check the entire urinary tract (i think, for obstructions or stones, or in preparation for the VCUG). The work-up will be completed with a Voiding Cystourethrogram (whew!) or VCUG, which is "just" like a video x-ray of the urinary tract while a contrast material passes through it, much like a barium enema (sigh, this may involve catheters and anesthesia). But we cannot do the VCUG until Lucas is clear from the UTI.

Please help pray for Lucas' healing from his UTI; we hope that the urinalysis and culture would come out clean. Also please pray that the work-up would reflect no other complications in his urinary tract. Lastly, please help us ask God to spare Lucas from any pain or discomfort that may be caused by the infection and the procedures that will be done to him.

Again, our family thanks you for your unceasing prayers, support and words of comfort. Salamat po talaga.

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Today is Lucas’ 6th month birth anniversary! (Note: I started writing this email last Tuesday) When you realize that every single day we are alive is a miracle, you cannot help but be profoundly amazed and grateful to the Giver of Life. We have learned to value each morning that God allows us to wake up; we have a bigger appreciation of life and its opportunities not only for Lucas but for every person as well.

As I have mentioned in my last update (which was two and a half months ago), most of the tests/ checkups will be done in February. We only completed the full itinerary of medical consultants and tests last Saturday, March 14; in time for this birthday update. So here’s a “quick” chronological rundown of Lucas’ recent hospital visits, answered prayers and prayer petitions:

January 17 was his first visit to the Developmental pedia. The consult was a base lining of his developmental status based on Locomotor, Personal/ Social, Hearing & Language, Eye & Hand Coordination and Performance/ Problem Solving. As expected, at age 4 months, he had global developmental delay and had skills equivalent to that of a 1.5-month old baby. He did quite well on the Performance/ Problem Solving part but significantly lagged in the Hearing/ Language department, which was reinforced by the fact that he was referred (failed) in his newborn hearing screening. This prompted our doctor to recommend a more thorough Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test and see an ENT specialist. At this point, this might sound devastating, and honestly we did feel downcast for a moment. But it was a bit expected and we knew we had to be patient with him and trust on what God has in store for the future. The doctor also assured us that it’s good that we detect these conditions in the early stages so we stand a better chance in correcting them. The earlier the intervention, the more effective.

The ABR was scheduled on February 7, which took around 3 hours because Lucas had to be asleep and completely still. On the same day, we saw the ENT doctor for the results of the ABR to be read and interpreted. ABR results were normal and compatible with his age (which means it is usually still a bit immature). The doctor also found earwax blockage which, together with his underdeveloped hearing system, might have caused his seeming hearing defect. We were able to get rid of the blockage after a week. Praise God!

The Feb 11 visit to his attending neonatologist showed no weight gain for the past month. This was not a good sign. He recommended early introduction of solid food to take in more calories with less effort (it takes him extra effort to suck from the breast/bottle because of his bad heart). Both the developmental and neonatal specialists also noticed nystagmus (involuntary shaking) in Lucas’ eyes and advised us to see an ophthalmologist.

Valentine’s Day came and it was also the time to see the heart doctor. The cardiologist requested another 2D echo to be done to check any developments in his heart. We were really hoping that this was going to be a “happy heart’s day!” For a certain extent it was, because we found out that his ASD had already closed! Indeed, it was no less than a miracle and a clear installment to God’s bigger, grander plans. However, the 2 other holes were still present. His VSD, which was causing pressure on his lungs, grew in diameter but was more or less still in the same proportion to the heart. The cardiologist told us that the possibility of resorting to heart surgery has increased since there was no significant change during the first 5 months. Nevertheless, we continue to pray that God would defy nature for Lucas, and believe that He only has to will it for it to be done.

Since we were already in the hospital, we proceeded with the blood tests for fT4/TSH (hypothyroid) and CBC (anemia). We were to visit the endocrinologist five days after and we needed to bring these tests during the next checkup. Due to the maintenance meds Lucas is taking, his fT4 and TSH levels already went down within the normal thresholds. However, the endocrinologist was still not happy with his poor weight gain. She decreased the dosage of his thyroid meds to (hopefully) help Lucas gain more pounds.

March 11 came and it was again time to see his attending neonatologist. Thankfully, Lucas gained 300 grams since the February visit. His CBC test for anemia also came out normal. Praise God!

Last Saturday, March 14, we finally got to see the ophthalmologist. Examining Lucas’ eyes, she broke the good news that Lucas’ eyes were clear from cataracts (DS babies are prone to cataracts). She also informed us that the nystagmus found by the other doctors was only physiological (not pathological) which will not cause vision impairment. However, she also noticed that Lucas’ eyes are moving towards nearsightedness, which may have been brought about by the DS and heredity. He would have to wear baby glasses at a very young age, maybe in 6 months.

So there! If you still got to read this far, thank you! We apologize for writing such a verbose and jargon-laden letter, since our updates are so far in between. But we really wanted to share the details so when you pray for Lucas, it will be specific. We thank you so much for your patience and understanding. We deeply appreciate your unceasing prayers and encouragement for our family. Please know that we always feel blessed every time people ask about Lucas because it is God’s affirmation that He’s with us and that a lot of people are praying for us.

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Merry Christmas everyone!

It’s been a while since the last update but I’m glad I found time during the holidays to write one. We are so excited to share about our Lucas’ progress and how your prayers have been bringing miracles to him every single day. Lucas is now 3 months old; and God has made him come a long way considering what he has gone through. Our Christmas was really extra special, extra magical, extra blessed this year.

Most of his major medical concerns remain the same, with conclusive updates/ tests/ diagnoses still hanging until early next year. This will be a true test of how patient and persevering our family’s prayers will be. But in my own quiet time, the Lord has compassionately affirmed me of His healing touch and has given us grace to continue to trust in Him.

Lucas’ last 2D Echo on October 21 showed that his PDA slightly increased in diameter from 1-2mm to 3-4mm. On the other hand, his ASD became smaller from 6-7mm to only 4mm and was re-diagnosed as Patent Foramen Ovale. These two holes, however, are less of a concern compared to the VSD whose size still remains unchanged (5-6mm). Nevertheless, the pulmonary hypertension has already been resolved and he has already stopped medication for this. =) He has been free from oxygen aid for a month now as he has been able to maintain the required oxygen saturation on his own. Listening to the murmurs in his heart, the cardiologist would tell us that she has a good feeling that the holes may close! His next 2D echo will be on Feb 2009; we’ll know by then if her predictions are right. With lots of hope, we claim that he’ll have a fully restored heart by the time he reaches his 5th month! =)

His blood test for T4/ TSH indicated compensated hypothyroidism. He had been taking maintenance medication to manage this and so far his endocrinologist is happy with the physical results and his weight gain. She doesn’t want to do a lot of blood extractions (to not hurt the baby) so the next blood test will also be next February.

The surgeon said that he would need to reach 10 kilos for him to be ready for the pull-through operation. Right now, he’s only at 4.3 kgs. although his weight development is within the average/ above-average for babies with Down Syndrome. Of course, his heart should also be working well (hopefully, without any operation) to be fit for the pull-through.

All in all, Lucas is doing great! Sometimes we catch ourselves putting extra pressure on him (or ourselves) in trying to attain certain goals (his oxygen sats, weight gain, etc.) but his doctors would remind us to relax a bit because he’s actually in much better shape now. And he’s never had any infection since he got out of the hospital (thanks to breastmilk!) considering Tatay, Nanay and Ahiya Rafa all had coughs or colds during the cold season. His doctors are all happy about his condition, so we should be too.

Here are Lucas’ other milestones/ updates:

- was already able to eat out with the family during Tatay’s birthday

- Baptised (again) and formally welcomed to God’s family last Dec 13

- Heard Mass in a Church for the first time on Dec 14

- Was able tojoin Christmas family pictorials

- Rolled over, found his hands, thumbsucked

- Was visited at home by Fr. Joey Faller; had his picture kept by Fr. Fernando Suarez for healing intentions; was prayed over by Sister Eppie Brasil of the Dominican Sisters of the Regina Rosarii .

- Started cooing and is now very social; reacts when being talked to, cries when left alone =)

Once again, we thank you for all the prayers you have offered for Lucas and our family. We welcome the New Year full of hope and joy as we anticipate more of God’s miracles and fulfilled promises. You will also be in our family’s prayers.

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Lucas will be discharged from the hospital (PGH) today. The infection caused by the toxins trapped in his body has already been controlled after 14 days of antibiotic treatment. We praise the Lord for bringing him out of danger and for his steady recovery from the operation.

We continue to ask for your intercession as Lucas still has some serious health concerns. He will be coming home with an oxygen tank in tow since he still can’t maintain his oxygen saturation without the aid of the tank. His congenital heart condition also causes him pulmonary hypertension so he would need maintenance medication to lessen the pressure in his lungs and heart. Please help us pray for the miracle of healing for his heart and that he will soon be independent from the oxygen aid. We also ask the Lord that he will be cleared from other Down syndrome-related conditions such as eye (cataracts), hearing and endocrine/ thyroid deficiencies.

Lucas’ next couple of months will be spent in preparation for his next operation – the pull-through. We would have to closely monitor his medication and heart condition, take care of his colostomy, and ensure he eats well and gains enough weight to be fit for the procedure. Again, we pray that his heart becomes restored and healthy so we won’t need to resort to heart surgery as a requisite to the pull-through.

We’d like to take this opportunity to again thank all of you for your unceasing prayers, words of encouragement and financial support. Your prayers and offered Masses have done awesome miracles for our family and have opened the gates of heaven for us to receive Divine grace to continue to trust and hope amidst desperate situations. Your words and messages have lifted our spirits up and allowed us to experience God’s embrace. Your sensitivity to provide material support served as God’s assurance of His infinite Providence and that He is truly in control. Thank you, thank you, for being the physical presence of Jesus during our recent trials. Please know that each of you will also be in our family’s prayers.

Our family will continue to trust that Jesus fully understands what we are going through having Himself experience human suffering. We hope and eagerly anticipate for His grand plans to unfold and for His miracles to happen. We put confidence in His promises and to the fact that His grace is indeed sufficient and is made strong in weakness.

Dear family, friends and prayer warriors,

Glory to God!

We just want to update you on Lucas’ condition and testify how really powerful our prayers have been working for him.

Last Friday, the surgeon already gave the go-signal that he can start feeding through the tube. We gave him the colostrums/ breast milk that May was able to store. We agree with our attending doctor that breast milk would help him to recover more quickly because it contains his natural anti-bodies and generous amounts of his mother’s love. They also started to wean him from the ventilator since Friday. Yesterday morning, he was off the ventilator and able to maintain a good level of oxygen in his body! The doctor advised us that he will be out of the ICU tomorrow! We are in awe at how the Lord has heard our prayers and brought miraculous healing to our baby. It is such a huge blessing to have so many people praying for Lucas. (We’re even blessed to have praying doctors who attend to our baby!)

Next prayer goals would be for Lucas to continuously maintain his oxygen saturation while his oxygen and heart medication is being decreased. Also for his blood tests and culture to have good results to indicate the infections are being controlled. We claim that he will be out of the hospital by Wednesday!

Young as he is, Lucas has taught us a lot about bravery and faithfulness. It is our privilege and honor to be chosen by God to receive this very special blessing. A lot of people have told us how they have been blessed by our son’s will to survive and his dependence to our faithful God.

May we continue to be prayerful knowing that God really does answer our prayers. Our doctor told us that the prayers have really been overflowing that even the other patients are getting better and are taken off their ventilators. (Please also pray for other children in the PGH Pediatric ICU).

Again, we thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness. For the prayers, kind words, emotional and material support. Our family will be forever grateful.

Dear family and friends,

First of all, we would like to thank you all for praying for our family – from May’s safe delivery up to the successful operation and speedy recovery of our son Lucas. Please know that your prayers have really helped us receive the daily grace we need to deal with the difficult situation we’re in; but more importantly, we believe that it is our prayers that are keeping our son Lucas alive and able to struggle with his condition.

I have wanted to send an update earlier but the recent series of events naturally didn’t allow me to. They say that when we pray, we should pray specifically so we’re sharing to you what Lucas is undergoing right now so we can truly be one in prayer.

Victor Lucas was born last September 17, 2008 at 12:14PM and he weighed 6 lbs. and 1 oz. We praise and thank God for another precious gift that He has entrusted us.

Shortly after his birth, his pediatrician (a family friend) talked to us to discuss some physical concerns she observed: Apparently, Lucas manifested some physical attributes that are indicative of Down syndrome. He was referred to a Pediatric Geneticist who did a chromosomal test to confirm, rule out or determine the type of the syndrome. Yesterday, we met with the doctor to discuss the results and she confirmed that it was indeed Down Syndrome – Trisomy 21, the type that occurs by chance and not hereditary.

Since heart problems are usually related to people with Down syndrome, we were referred to a pediatric cardiologist who ordered a 2D Echo of his heart. The results showed that Lucas has multiple congenital heart problems: Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). This means that he has 3 holes in his heart. These conditions may still heal by themselves in about a year’s time (and that is part of what we’re praying for) but we have to closely monitor that he doesn’t have difficulty breathing; else he will take medication for the first year.

However, the most pressing concern was the condition of his gastro-intestinal tract. He was not able to excrete his bowels during the first 48 hours of life. After a few days of observation and management by a neo-natal doctor, there was still no progress so he had to be referred to a pediatric surgeon. By this time, an emergency operation had to be done because the trapped wastes had already caused infections in his system and bloodstream (Sepsis). The procedure will diagnose the problem through a biopsy and also correct whatever problem will be found. The biopsy showed that he had Hirschprung’s disease (absence of nerve tissues in the colon) and Anal Stenosis (narrowing of the rectum) so they had to perform a colostomy. For the next couple of months he’ll be releasing his waste directly from his intestines through a bag on the side of his body until he becomes healthy enough for another operation to connect the healthy part of his intestines to his rectum.

Lucas’ post-operation was very critical. Usually, babies with Down syndrome already face higher-risks during surgical operations. His complex heart condition also didn’t make it any better for him. The first hours after the operation were very grim for us because his vital signs were not very good.

Right now, there are two major points of concern: first is his heart condition, which causes inefficient distribution of oxygen in his body. He is still on the ventilator and cannot breath on his own. Hopefully his body gets strong enough to get off the ventilator soon. Second is the infection that has spread in his body. They still have to manage and monitor through antibiotics to make sure the infection is controlled and that Lucas do not contract new infections. He will have to stay in the hospital for more than a week to control the infections and get steady treatment of antibiotics. (But we know that with our prayers he can recover much more quickly.)

This will be a long hard road for Lucas and our family. But it gives us confidence knowing that God is with us every step of the way and that you will keep on praying for Lucas. Like Abraham to Isaac, May and I have entrusted our son to God, knowing that He can take care of Lucas much better than we ever can. We hold on to His promise that He has great plans for our son. Right now, we just take refuge in the small victories and graces that God gives us daily. With God, there are no accidents and we just look forward to the day that God will be glorified through this difficult experience.

Although he is a very sick baby, we know that Lucas is also a very brave boy – maybe even braver than his parents. He fights and his doctors notice that. And so we fight with him and for him! We hope that you will continue praying to sustain him until he completely recovers. Please also pray for our family that we get enough strength and grace for the trying times still ahead.

Again, we thank you for being our source of strength, inspiration and blessings through your daily prayers and Mass offerings. Thank you also to those who made the offering of self through blood donations.

0645H We woke up and May told me she has a hunch that she'll give birth today or tomorrow.
0720H While having breakfast, May felt some discomfort and suspected they were contractions. We timed the duration and intervals on the way to the office. They regularly occured in 5 minute intervals lasting 60 seconds long.
0802H Biboy swiped-in for work.
0803H May swiped-in for work.
0805H May texted her OB-GYN to inform her of the suspected labor. OB ordered that she proceed to Medical City for check-up. May decided to observe some more until 0900H.
0938H We arrived at the Medical City Pre-labor room for check-in.
1015H Resident doctor performs IE. We're already 7-8cm!
1130H 10cm! Delivery on the way! Dra. Quevedo now on board and in charge.
1214H Victor Lucas is born! 6 lbs. and 1 oz. APGAR is 9,9.

It was one of our faith goals for 2008: Celebrate Rafa's first birthday.

He turned one year old last May 22, 2008 and we scheduled the party on the 24th which was the first Saturday after his actual birthday.

We didn't only pray for financial blessings for the party but we also asked God to make it special and that family and friends would be able to grace the occassion (although it was quite a distance for some relatives and Odelco friends who aren't used to the usual neighborhood party).

As always, God was faithful to His promise. There was an outpour of favors and providence for the party and a lot of our loved ones were present. Everybody had a good time!

The party had a Rock Concert theme, "Rafanatic Rock Party". Here was the digital invite/ teaser we sent thru email.

And here was the All-Access Pass that served dual purpose as invite and nametag, in keeping with the theme.

May has been really anxious about having an ultrasound ever since we entered the 20th week of gestation, wanting to know the baby's gender and to check on his health. Last Friday, May 16, we managed to squeeze an appointment for an ultrasound although we were originally scheduled for May 29.

In a few months, we'll welcome another baby boy to the family! Rafa's gonna have a tag-team partner very soon. As early as now, I'm dubbing them the Bash Brothers (taken from the Mighty Ducks series) but hope they won't wreak as much havoc. This is going to be so much fun!

I can only utter extravagant praises to our Divine Lord and Life-giver for another magnificent blessing! Last Sunday (Feb 3, 2008) we learned that we are pregnant with our 2nd baby! We have experienced so much joy and love with our first-born Rafa. And we are just as excited for another serving of God's overflowing blessings!

The gravid uterus contains a single gestational sac measuring 26 mm in its widest diameter, compatible with 7 weeks and 4 days age of gestation. Cardiac pulsations were appreciated; however, the ultrasound machine is technically unable to compute for the exact heart rate at present scan. The yolk sac (4.1mm) is intact. There is no evidence of subchronic hematoma.

Both ovaries are normal in size and echopattern. A cystic structure,measuring approximately 16.3 mm, is seen in the left ovary.

One of the major highlights (and biggest blessings) of my US trip was the opportunity to catch Spring Awakening in Broadway! The musical score was done by Duncan Sheik and up to now I still have a serious case of LSS from the soundtrack! I guess the number of Tonys it garnered would say just how this musical rocks!

opening eyes, broadening horizons, shattering impressions

I actually prepared a lengthy piece for the Chicago leg but scrapped it altogether in the fear of posting another overzealous entry (like the last one). Besides, after 6 states and all the stuff that we tried to squeeze-in onto my 2-week stay, I don’t think I’ll be able to compose equally comprehensive accounts for each city. Just to even arrange the hundreds of pictures from the trip took me another 2 weeks!

So which city is the best? (I’ve been asked this quite a couple of times) Let’s just say that each can hold its own against the others; each has its own character and charm. It’s just a big blessing to be able to experience all these. This trip has been one big eye-opener for me. It truly broadened my horizons and shattered some of my previous impressions of the US. Galing lang ni God talaga!!!

After 21 long hours of travel (without brushing my teeth), I've finally arrived!

I think I deserve some congratulating considering that this is my first time out of the country and I'm on a solo flight (literally)! I think I did pretty well, the fact that I didn't get lost or miss any flights or do something really stupid...haha!

Ok, for those who still don't know where in the world I am, I'm in Naperville, Illinois on a business trip (software training to be exact).

Back to the trip; NAIA was a breeze. Well, save for the dozen times that you get checked for security. I already checked-in the night before thru the net so that made it more convenient. Immigration line was expectedly long but bearable. We flew on time at 8:05 MLA time.

Narita, the stopover, was a four-hour flight. We were there around lunch time so this is where my meager budget suffered its first blow, having no choice but to buy a 700-Yen Ramen (that's $6.25 or P350 for a medium size bowl)!!!! But the airport was nice and clean, as you would expect any Japanese facility to be. The flight, however,was delayed since we had to wait for a partner flight coming from Hong Kong.

The next flight would be the biggest challenge: a 10-hour haul from Narita to the twin cities of Minnesota/ St. Paul. Wow, this was the most uncomfortable trip I've ever had. I'm used to long bus rides in the Philippines but for some reason, the air version was just aweful. I was already thinking of the opposite flight back home. Yikes! We still managed to land at Minnesota only around 9 minutes late, though.

When I got past Immigration in Minneapolis -which was quite uneventful, by the way- the excitement caught me again. Finally, I've set foot on US soil. Not that I was over-eager to do so, but the thought of being this far from home was a thrill. The things that I've experienced and learned at this point was already a handful. And still, there's more.

Connecting flight to Chicago was another 2-hour wait. I just took the time to relax a bit. By this time I was really, really sick of flying. Good thing I was seated beside a nice old couple headed for a vacation in Ireland. Also, I was asleep most of the time in this flight. Again, the trip was on schedule and we finally reached O' Hare at 3:30PM Chicago time.

Prior to the trip I had already searched and inquired the best (read: the cheapest) way to Naperville and I consistently got the same answer: by cab which will cost me around $45 plus toll and tip. Good thing I went around the airport and found a shuttle service (Go Airport Express) which will get me to Hampton Inn and back for "only" 86$. I really praise God for this but still if I converted this to pesos, it would've thought it's criminal! So Mr. Cheapo reluctantly throws in a $3 tip, thinking that that would've gone a long way back home, haha! The driver was a fair-skinned Indian-American guy; a very friendly fellow who reminded me of Rob Schneider's character in Big Daddy. haha!

And so finally, I reached the hotel at 5:30PM (CHI time)! That was one tiring trip, but a nice experience as well. A few things worth noting from my trip: I was planning to wear jeans but my wife May advised me to to wear jogging pants instead. This turned out to be a great idea since (a) it was comfortable during the long travel, (b) my travel kit fit in its deep side pocket and (3) i didn;t have to take off any belt everytime we were checked for security (and there were many of that!). You should also take advantage of online check-ins and self-serve boarding pass printing, which will give you a lot of convenience. It will also be very hard to take pictures when traveling alone- just take a look at my awful solo pics! Hahaha. And lastly, don't be afraid to ask around for directions, the locals are a the best source of tips on how to make the best of your trip!

2.5 hours after I posted my last entry (rafa update), May's water bag broke. Ang hirap biruin ni God, mukhang sineryoso niya yung sinabi kong, "I can't wait to see Rafa."

Medically, it's a bit too early pa because it's still pre-term at 36 weeks. However, I also know for a fact that God not only has a sense of humor, but He also has impeccable timing! So I won't say it's too early nor too late. In total faith in God, I'd say, we're right on time!

Please pray for May. She already has moderate contractions but only 1cm dilated. We'll have to wait a couple of hours more before she delivers. Let's all pray for a safe, healthy and NORMAL delivery!

The truth is that I never expected to enjoy the last Youth for Christ International Leaders’ Conference (YFC-ILC) in Metro Naga two weekends ago as much as I actually did!

My last ILC as an official, true-blue YFC member was in Cebu, circa 2000. In 2003, I attended the Homecoming (YFC Reunion) Conference in Clark with fellow YFC alumni and old friends who were still in active service. The Naga conference, however, was my first conference as officially the Chapter Couple Coordinator for YFC Meralco!

Reckless would be the perfect term to describe what I was back when I attended past ILCs. The young adult gets a thick sense of freedom from being miles away from the authority of parents and school, at the company of peers sharing the same faith and ideals and being encouraged to creatively express one’s self. And as the 90’s youth anthem goes, these young ones cannot be halted nor put in a box.

And thus the reason for my paranoia. This time around, not only I cannot afford to be reckless but now I’m responsible for 13 adolescents with the same tendencies for unruliness. Call me praning but I just know what’s it like to be in there, even if you tell me that it’s still a YFC gathering.

How quickly I forgot that after all the long talk about how careless the youth can get, there is one saving grace that we get from all this. And it is this…

This is the way to worship. Uninhibited. Loud. Powerful. With reckless abandon. This is exactly what Jesus meant when He told the disciples not to prevent the children from coming to Him. I suddenly realized how I missed this kind of worship!

… and I was happily proven wrong by my dear Meralco YFCs. They were much more responsible than I was during my time as a YFC. They totally gave me zero headaches, as they promptly attended the sessions and had a blast with the parties and the praising. I absolutely enjoyed their company and at one point, I felt I was 17 again! =P

Share ko lang po itong article na ito. I'm not necessarily campaigning for them but I think we should be aware of ALL our options come election time. If you have any info/article to help us make a well-discerned decision, I encourage you to share them.

Honestly, I think these people are a welcome deviation from the usual items on the menu of traditional politics and are, at the least, worth considering. =)

Senate bets run on God-centered politics

MANILA, Philippines -- The tall man, grinning, offered handshakes toshoppers. A total stranger, he was welcomed anyway at the Greenhills"tiangge" in San Juan yesterday.

"I am Dr. Martin Bautista. I am running for senator under AngKapatiran (The Brotherhood) party. I am not a traditional politician,"he told curious strangers huddled around him.

"Bautista who? Ang Kapatiran what?" was the quietly polite reaction ofthe shoppers. One went further and asked: "Do you have any chance ofwinning?"

Bautista, 44, knows only too well it's a tall order to go against abunch of senatorial hopefuls parading celebrity wives, prominent namesand bottomless campaign kitties.

But the gastro-enterologist would not have abandoned a lucrativemedical practice in the United States if he was not convinced ofvictory, or at least a shot at it.

Bautista left for the US a year after he graduated from the Universityof the Philippines in 1989. Throughout the 17 years that he spent as aphysician in New York and Oklahoma, he said he never applied for agreen card.

Last year, he came home for good, bringing with him his wife, aUP-trained pulmonologist, and four young daughters.

Life is short
"Life is short, so better spend it by doing something good for yourcountry," he said in an interview at the Ang Kapatiran headquarters at Greenmeadows in Pasig.

Ang Kapatiran (Alliance for the Common Good) is a political party putup three years ago by Nandy Pacheco, the well-known advocate for agunless society. The party promotes God-centered politics and callsfor the abolition of the "pork barrel" and gambling, among otheradvocacies.

Aside from Bautista, the party is fielding three other candidates forsenator. Mario Ongkiko, Zosimo Paredes and Adrian Sison, who are all lawyers.

Except for Ongkiko, who is acknowledged to be one of the country's toplawyers, the others are unknowns in politics.

"All the pundits are saying that we won't win, but that's a defectiveconcept," said the 50-year-old Sison who specializes in family law andtaxation cases.

Abundance of idealism
"We're praying that the people will finally wake up and realize thatthere are genuine alternatives to traditional politics andpoliticians, " he said.

There's an abundance of idealism among the four candidates, includingOngkiko who has been practicing law for the past 50 years. At 75, hedoesn't really need the prestige and clout that come with being asenator to cement his place in the sun.

"I can earn enough to last me my lifetime. But I'm not thinking ofmyself. I'm doing this for my children and my grandchildren, " he said.

So it is also with the 58-year-old Paredes who is best remembered forpublicly criticizing the transfer of an American soldier, theconvicted rapist Daniel Smith, to the custody of the US Embassy.

It cost Paredes his job as executive director of the presidentialcommission monitoring the implementation of the Visiting ForcesAgreement.

Paredes clarified that he would not use the issue to land a Senateseat. He said he had no intention of even mentioning the name of theFilipino woman who accused the US Marine officer of raping her.

"I won't mention anything about it unless I'm asked. I didn't evenknow that many Filipinos appreciated what I had done," he said.

Educating voters
Pacheco said the decision to field senatorial candidates in May wasmeant in part to educate Filipino voters who have become inured totraditional politics.

"The people are truly fed up with what they see," he said.

"If [the Kapitiran candidates] win, it will be a clear sign thatFilipino voters are becoming mature," he said.

But what can three lawyers and a doctor do in the Senate?

They all vow to vigorously pursue the Kapatiran vision "to bring backthe teachings of God into the center of politics." This is theresponse of Pacheco and his peers to the Second Vatican Council's ideaof an "empowered laity."

"The laity must lead in the renewing of politics," says one of thegroup's leaders.

Pro-life party
The party is clearly "pro-life," is for "progressive disarmament" inthe national and international level, and regards as a priorityprojects for the homeless, elderly, prisoners, disabled, veterans andthe youth.

Kapatiran is also unique in vowing to discipline members for any wrongdoing.

Ongkiko said theirs was the only genuine political party, noting thatboth the administration' s Team Unity and the Genuine Opposition werecarrying candidates who used to belong to the other side.

"There's no opposition or administration, it's just a fantasy. Theydon't have a platform. All they want is to win," he said.

Paredes said the administration and opposition candidates wouldeventually "cancel each other out," paving the way for Kapatirancandidates to be noticed.

"It's like seeing a streak of white in a backdrop of black," he said.

The Kapatiran candidates are banking on the honest support ofwell-meaning Filipinos to make up for their lack of politicalmachinery.

"We ask the people to run our campaign, to champion the cause ofchange," Ongkiko said.

No gimmicks
The party has launched a project called "Alay Panglinis Pulitika" toinvite campaign donations. It has also quietly enlisted the support ofa number of parish-based organizations, including the wide-rangingBasic Ecclesial Communities (BECs).

Not being entitled to poll watchers, it will rely on groups like theParish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting to ensure honestelections in May and indirectly safeguard their votes.

The campaign strategy is quite different from the traditionalpolitical gimmicksâ€”the sunny smiles, colorful dress, catchy jingles and celebrity endorsersâ€”that this early are threatening to dull thetaste of Filipino voters just three days into the official campaignperiod.

Ongkiko, Paredes, Sison and Bautista will basically rely on the bestof intentions and work to effectively communicate them to voters.

"We will talk sanely to the people," Paredes said.

The Holy Spirit
For Bautista, the presence of God will help in the communication job,much like what the Holy Spirit did for St. Paul and the Apostles whenthey spread the good news nearly 2,000 years ago.

Yesterday, Bautista was on a one-man campaign at the densely populatedGreenhills area. Offering nothing but flyers, a sincere greeting and aclear legislative program, he was not shunned as just another nuisancecandidate.It's a good start for someone who doesn't ride on the popularity of aformer president, does not sing or dance, and is not the husband of a movie star, and is a movie star himself.

This week, Meralco is celebrating its 104th anniversary!

It's the most festive (and most expensive) celebration after many years of simple commemoration of its inception. We have enjoyed a lot of blessings after going full-blast in our Corporate Social Responsibility Programs,specifically, after partnering with Gawad Kalinga.

We waited weeks for this day to come and finally we confirmed something we already believed in even before we saw it: our baby's a boy! You see, one of May's 2006 faith goals was to have a baby BOY by December. And since God, in His perfect faithfulness, truly fulfilled most of our faith goals last year, I just knew He would deliver once again!

Again, it was magical! He moved a lot, hopefully not an indication of how makulit/malikot he's going to be! He also shamelessly showed us the family jewels! Yep! Undeniably a boy!

We expected to feel him a little earlier, around mid-January. Admittedly, I was a bit worried when it was showing no signs of life after a week passed with no tickles at all.

And then it happened. Quickening. A tiny muscle twitch, my wife described it. Our OB consultant confirmed it was indeed HIM. It was already the 29th of January. During that time, it was only the mother who can feel and recognize him.

Last Sunday, he let out some big kicks, enough for me to feel 'em. Strong little bugger, I would say! I didn't realize it then but thinking of it now, I think the moment was nothing short of magical! WOW talaga! I'm posting it here so I won't forget how it felt like. Our little bundle of joy saying, "Hi pops!" :)
